Conquering Hollywood An Insider's Look at the Movie Biz
To make it in Hollywood, you have to be a player. That means you have to add savvy to talent, and inner resolve to outer beauty. It is not enough to be a great singer or a stunning hottie. You have to put your career first -- before friends, fun and freedom. Sure, you're thinking. I'm ready to do that.
But are you really?
To "make it" as an actor in Hollywood, you have to beat your best buddy to the biggest auditions and turn your charm into a commodity, instead using it of a way of getting to know people you like. To "make it" as a director, you have to use your every last skill, connection and dollar to get the right producers to notice you and give you the chance to drive through that critical green light.
If you don't believe me, take a turn at the game of Conquering Hollywood. It's a cutthroat look at the true ways and means of Tinseltown. In your Midwestern or Eastern seaboard dream world, the lights of Southern California beckon you through a haze of orange smog. Actors! Producers! Directors! Writers! Just a Nobody? Get a car and pick up a screenplay. Compete with other players to make hit movies. Whether you're a nobody or a player, everyone in Tinseltown wants to be King of Hollywood!
But there is only one King and his joy lasts only 15 minutes after an intense, hand-to-hand battle. To succeed at the game of Conquering Hollywood, you have to compete with the same people who used to be your friends. You have to compete all the time without losing concentration for a second. Compete for what? For possession of the things you need to make hit movies.
Okay, okay. Specifics. Some of the things you need are: Luck, Talent and Money. So, drive around L.A., and land at all the right spots, from the Coffee Shop to the Pier, from the Gym to the Movie Set -- to the House in the Hollywood Hills. It's only through interaction with other people that you will gain the things you need to succeed in the movie biz and those things are represented in the game by the little chips that you grab and keep to yourself, over on your side of town.
After you pick up, steal or otherwise misappropriate the chips that represent "Luck," "Talent," and "Money," all three at the same time, you've done enough to make your first hit movie. Then, in the well-known habit of Hollywood, the next thing you do is upgrade your car. Do that a few more times, all the while on the way cheating your friends out of any chips they have, using what's called "Personality Power" and any other method-acting way you can think of.
Before you know it, you have very few friends and lots of acquaintances who want to make a deal. But now you're driving a convertible, instead of that old beat-up car. If you're sneaky and demanding enough, you'll end up a Nominee, instead of a wannabe. You'll be cruising in a limo, on your way to the pavilion to take what's called "the Envelope Please" and get a star with your name on it, plucked right out of that inky, stinky sky. The King. For now...
