WHAT AN ACTOR WANTS
The three things an Actor needs are: TALENT, LOOKS and GRIND.
Let's talk about Talent, the sine qua non of being an actor. Talent cannot be created out of nothing, but it can be developed if you have the spark...
Can you act? You should know the yes-or-no answer to that question. Ask other people for their honest opinion -- not your Mom or another actor. If you've given yourself an "A" for innate talent, then get to work. Go to acting class. Perform in plays. Hone what you have. Because when you get in front of an agent, you're going to need all you can muster.
As for Looks, this necessary thing also cannot be created out of nothing. If you're not really attractive, then emphasize being really average, or really strange, or creepy or exotic, or whatever. If you look like the "Average Joe," forget about the goatee and the leather jacket and show up for the audition dressed for the part.
What about Grind? It means hard work and suggests the aroma of coffee. Actors need this trait as much as they need Talent and Looks. If you're giving Hollywood "a year or so" to discover you and then heading back home to Ohio, don't bother coming to Tinseltown at all.
Assuming you're here for the duration, learn to drink java all day, and to serve pasta prima vera with the right wine all night. If you don't have the waiter's cool, learn to type and use Microsoft Office. You'll be a cherished temp.

LINK SCOUT How about a site that helps you connect with other actors -- and with casting agents?
Actorsite.comhas community forums like "Living in L.A." and "L.A. Theatre." Moreover, the site lets you post your acting resume and create an Actor's Web site -- for free. The resume pages are searched by real-world casting agents looking to fill roles on TV shows and commercials. The agents also post acting jobs on the site, so you can scan what's available and send out your daily headshot packages.
